Whenever I looked at the scar left on my foot, memories of the incident would plague my mind.
It was a hot and stuffy afternoon. May and I were perspiring like wet sponges.
I looked at the signboard and cried out to May, ”Hey! May! Look, we’re going to reach the rafting centre!’’
I beamed from ear to ear pleased with my quick observation.
'It still seems so far away! I'm tired, let's take a break,' May grouchily lamented and sat down before I could respond.
I suppose it was alright since the rafting centre is just about a kilometre away, I thought to myself.
The water was azure and clear. May suggested swimming in the river. Since it was a blazing hot day, I agreed. I’ve never told anyone I had a phobia for water. It all started 3 years ago during the summer camp. While rafting, Pete‘ve pushed me into the water. I was so horrified that I screamed in horror even I‘ve reached shore! The minute my feet touched the water, I regretted agreeing to May’s suggestion.
I was twitching nervously. My legs were wobbly. However, I didn’t want to be a wet blanket. I mustered up every ounce of courage within me and stepped into the water. Sensing my uneasiness, May held my hands and led me into the water.
Everything seemed to be working out perfectly until I spotted something moving in the water. Goosebumps immediately crept on me! I tugged at May's hand, trying to alert her. She thought I was backing out and ignored me.
All of a sudden, something emerged from the water. To my utter disbelief, it was a crocodile! Everything happened so quickly, I wasn't sure if I tried to hit it first or did it attack me first. When I regained my composure, it had already sunk its teeth into my foot. I was in so much pain, I screamed so loudly. I was sure my penetrating scream had broken the tranquility of the atmosphere.
I took the log beside me and tried hitting it! I screamed at the top of my voice for May. My heart was thudding like a jackhammer! Hearing my shriek, immediately, May went to look for a weapon.
With a big log in her hands, May started hitting in infuriation at the crocodile. To help myself, I tried frantically to pull myself back onto the river bank. I knew it was a moment between life and death. There was no time to think. I knew May’s efforts were in vain. I was as helpless as a kitten.
‘’Bang!’’ a loud shot reverberated through the air. By now, blood was oozing out of my leg like rivulets. To my utter dismay, the crocodile was shot! I was terrified as I stood rooted at the river bank in mixed horror and confusion. The orang asli had shot it. May and I immediately poured out our gratitude towards him. He told us that this place was a popular spot for crocodiles.
He treated my wound and send us packing immediately. He did not have to chase us for I was eager to leave. I was lucky to be alive. I will never put my life at risk again.
